For owners who need to transport multiple horses to shows and events, a 3-horse or 4-horse trailer is the best way to keep your horses safe on the road. The trailers come in both living quarters and non-living quarters styles. If you are a frequent traveler, the living quarters style is a great option, as it gives you a place to stay on the road. If you make shorter trips, choose the non-living quarters style for a lightweight option.
These trailers also come in bumper pull and gooseneck towing styles. Goosenecks are much more common for both 3-horse trailers and 4-horse trailers. Gooseneck 3-horse trailers and gooseneck 4-horse trailers Choose a bumper pull style if you are on a tight budget or want to be able to pull the trailer with a regular vehicle.
At Transwest, it’s our goal to work with you to find the best 3-horse trailer or 4-horse trailer to suit your long-term needs. That’s why we proudly partner with the best brands in trailer manufacturing featuring Cimarron and Logan Coach. With interiors that range from high-end luxury to budget-friendly, there is sure to be a comfortable option to fit your needs.
Once you’ve chosen a trailer, we offer trusted on-site financing plans that work within your needs and budget. We invite you to explore our inventory and then reach out to our knowledgeable sales team to schedule a personal tour.
Yes, some 3-horse trailers and 4-horse trailers feature living quarters. Living quarters horse trailers feature a dedicated space where you can relax, sleep, or work while you’re on the road. These trailers are perfect if you frequently travel for shows or events. If you’re just looking to transport your horses and don’t need a dedicated living space, you should explore non-living quarters horse trailers.
The average 4-horse trailer is about 36 ft. long and approximately 7 ft. 8 in. tall, although the optimal height and length will depend on the size of your horses. A 36 ft. long trailer is designed to give your horses plenty of head space and a way to load and unload each horse individually. Smaller trailers that have a length of 20-30 ft. may not have as much room for the horses to move about. Keep in mind horses need enough room to move, but not so much that they sway around when the trailer is in motion. A living quarters horse trailer may be as long as 40 ft. or more.
Like all trailers, the length of a 3-horse trailer varies depending on the make, model, and whether or not it includes a living quarters section. A 3-horse trailer may be anywhere from 10 ft. to 40 ft. long. Bumper pull trailers tend to be shorter, with a length between 16 ft. to 19 ft. Gooseneck style trailers with living quarters are typically between 21 ft. to 27 ft. long, though some models may be longer or shorter. The length of the trailer generally does not have an impact on whether or not you need a license to pull it, or on the type of towing vehicle that is required. Make sure to acquaint yourself with your vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), as this will tell you what size trailer you can tow safely.
When empty, a 3-horse trailer typically weighs between 2,800 pounds and 3,900 pounds. A gooseneck style may weigh anywhere from 4,000 pounds to 5,600 pounds. When purchasing a 3-horse trailer, it’s very important to acquaint yourself with its weight. This will tell you what type of towing vehicle you can use. The weight is also critical for the safety of your horses, passengers, and yourself.
Keep in mind that the loaded weight of your trailer is not the same as the curb weight (weight when the trailer is empty). To determine your loaded weight, take the trailer to a truck weigh station, usually found at highway truck stops. You should be familiar with your state’s towing requirements, as you may need to register your vehicle or get a license if the trailer is over a certain weight threshold.
As long as it is properly hitched and towed, a bumper pull trailer is just as safe as any other type of trailer. The main difference between the bumper pull and gooseneck styles is that a bumper pull trailer attaches to the bumper hitch on your vehicle, while a gooseneck trailer attaches in the bed of a truck. Because of this, you must make sure that your towing vehicle has the weight capacity to pull your 3-horse or 4-horse trailer.
If you attempt to pull any trailer without the proper towing vehicle, it can be dangerous for your horses, passengers, and yourself. Check your owners’ manual or the driver’s side door of your vehicle for the weight rating (also called towing capacity) of your vehicle.
