New Horse Trailer
Looking for a horse trailer that is convenient, cost-efficient, and easy to tow? A bumper pull horse trailer may be the perfect option. Towing a bumper pull horse trailer requires the use of a hitch located beneath the rear bumper of your vehicle. Since this is generally a factory option on most pickup trucks and SUVs, these trailers require little in the way of extra equipment aside from possibly adding a weight distribution system.
Great for beginners, the bumper pull trailer makes it simple to safely hook up and go on your journey to a horse show or a trail riding adventure. The bumper pull model is typically less expensive than their gooseneck counterparts, making it a cost-effective option for transporting your equine friends. With a smaller bumper pull horse trailer, making a quick visit to the veterinarian or the local trail is both convenient and easy.
At Transwest Truck Trailer RV, we offer high-quality, custom aluminum trailers that give you better fuel mileage to lower the cost of ownership. Quiet 3M Construction makes them last longer with an insulated roof and tongue along with an extruded aluminum floor. We are a proud distributor of horse trailer parts and accessories so you can get a quick repair and get back on the road.
A bumper pull trailer refers to a trailer with a certain type of hitch that attaches to the ball hitch on the towing vehicle. Bumper pull trailers are generally smaller and more lightweight than their gooseneck counterparts. They are typically less expensive. You can usually tow a bumper pull trailer with most trucks, SUVs, and even motorhomes provided that they have a ball hitch. Also, you don’t usually need to purchase or install any special towing equipment, with the possible exception of a weight distribution system if the trailer is particularly heavy.
In general, a bumper pull trailer is a good option for quick, spontaneous trips. They are also great for beginners since it is simple to hook up the trailer and head out on a trip.
Most bumpers have a towing capacity of approximately 3,500 lbs. To figure out your vehicle’s towing capacity, check the owner’s manual. Some vehicles also have their weight ratings printed on the driver side door. If you can’t find it, check with your manufacturer by phone or on their website. Once you’ve figured out your vehicle’s towing capacity (also called a weight rating), you will need to determine the weight of the trailer itself. If the trailer’s gross weight is less than your vehicle’s towing capacity, it is safe to tow with a bumper hitch. However, if it is greater than your weight rating, you should not hook the trailer up to your vehicle. Don’t forget to factor in the weight of passengers, furniture, gear, and equipment in your bumper pull trailer.
Each trailer type has pros and cons. If you need to transport many horses, a lot of gear, or any type of heavy load, a gooseneck trailer is probably your best option. That’s because the long neck of a gooseneck trailer attaches to the bed of the truck. This tends to be a more stable connection than you’d get with a bumper pull trailer. The gooseneck attachment will also help to reduce the amount of sway in your trailer when you are on the road.
However, a gooseneck trailer is not for everyone. If you have only a few horses, a light load, or tend to make spontaneous trips, a bumper pull trailer may be a better choice. This type of trailer attaches to the bumper hitch of your vehicle. They’re easy to hook up, especially because many vehicles come with a bumper hitch already, and they don’t require much more specialized equipment.
Bumper pull trailers are typically more lightweight than other trailer styles. A 2-horse bumper pull trailer may weigh somewhere between 2,400 to 3,200 lbs. when empty, while a 2-horse gooseneck trailer will weigh around 3,700 to 4,700 lbs. The weight of the bumper pull trailer will fluctuate depending on the brand, model, and options.
For example, a trailer that does not include a dressing room is likely to be on the lower end of the weight spectrum (closer to 2,400 lbs.), while a trailer that does have a dressing room will probably be closer to 3,200 lbs. A 3-horse bumper pull trailer with a dressing room may weigh in at approximately 4,100 lbs.
The type of trailer you should choose – bumper pull or gooseneck – depends on your needs. If you want a large trailer with lots of amenities and a luxurious living space, a gooseneck trailer would be a better option. Unlike the bumper pull trailer, which attaches to a truck or vehicle with a ball hitch, the gooseneck trailer connects to a hitch that is anchored in the middle of the towing truck bed. This creates a stronger connection which is great for towing large, weighty trailers.
However, if you take short trips, a bumper pull trailer would be a better option. It doesn’t require any special equipment besides a ball hitch, so it is simple to set up and go. It also has the added advantage of being compatible with a wider range of towing vehicles. Most SUVs, for example, have a ball hitch.
I purchased the 2020 Cimarron Showstar. It’s been so easy to tow this trailer around town, and I was very happy with the level of service I got from Transwest.
